LAN's origins date back to 1929, when it was established as a state company with the objective of providing air transport service for passengers, cargo and mail. After 60 years of being run by the state, it became privatized in 1989.

Thanks to its vast coverage network and strategic alliances, the company currently provides service to more than 70 international destinations within the Americas , Europe and the South Pacific.

LAN is part of the oneworld alliance, along with such prestigious airlines as American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia and Qantas. This year, Japan Airlines, Malév Hungarian and Royal Jordanian joined this select group, expanding the one world network to nearly 700 destinations in approximately 150 countries. The Airlines LAN Argentina and LAN have also become oneworld affiliates, meaning that every airline in the LAN alliance is now part of this esteemed group.
